Multi-Tenant WhatsApp SaaS Platform
A multi-tenant WhatsApp messaging platform built on the Bird (MessageBird) WhatsApp Business API — multi-channels, multi-organizations, multi-workspaces, with granular roles and permissions per tenant.
FIG. 01 — SYSTEM FLOW
Constraint in → contract out. Every integration lands in a single system of record.
01
Problem
Organizations needed WhatsApp as a real business channel — notifications, conversations, campaign messaging — but each team was wiring its own ad-hoc integration. There was no isolation between clients, no shared notion of who could send what, and every new customer meant new plumbing. The business needed one platform that could onboard tenants safely and independently.
02
Architecture
The platform is built on the Bird (MessageBird) WhatsApp Business API as the messaging transport. On top of it sits a true multi-tenant model: organizations own workspaces, workspaces own channels, and a granular role-and-permission layer controls who can configure channels, send messages, or view conversations. Tenant isolation is enforced at the data layer, so one customer's conversations can never leak into another's. Webhooks from Bird are normalized into a single event stream that each tenant's workflows consume.
03
Trade-offs
Building on a third-party transport means the platform inherits Bird's rate limits and template-approval rules — so message classification, queuing, and retry logic had to be first-class citizens, not afterthoughts. Granular permissions add real complexity to every query, but the alternative (trust-based access) is unacceptable when tenants share infrastructure. Multi-workspace design keeps onboarding fast at the cost of a stricter domain model.
04
Impact
New organizations onboard as tenants instead of new codebases: isolated workspaces, their own channels, and permissioned teams under one platform. Operational messaging — notifications, approvals, customer conversations — runs on a shared, observable foundation rather than scattered integrations.
